Real Science: Mars water mystery

Andrea Thompson's "Mars Real Mystery Surfaces" at space.com informs us "that water vapor is settling on or in the Martian dirt then being released back into the air on a daily cycle." Mystery is: while the change in humidity is experimentally detected in atmosphere, the Phoenix probe "finds the dirt below perplexingly dry".
