Nebula Awards 2008 - novelettes: Winner & nominees

See opening remarks in Nebula Awards 2008 - short stories post for sources & conventions.

Only 3 of the 9 stories are from 2008; rest are from 2007.

Update 30 February 2009: Final ballot is announced. Includes an entry that wasn't in preliminary list.
Update 2 March 2009: SFWA announces a correction to the final ballot!
Update 26 April 2009: Winners announced.

List of stories (best first, unread last).

Ranking for first 3 entries - Kessel's, Gardner's, & Kosmatka's - are arbitrary. I would put these 3 at about same level - with no personal favorites among them.

And of the 4 stories I've read so far, there is not even one I would call strong.
  1. [winner, final, prelim] John Kessel's "Pride and Prometheus" (B); download author's collection Baum Plan for Financial Independence and Other Stories that includes this story, or only story from F&SF site (page 01, 02, 03, & 04); F&SF, January 2008; mildly science fiction: Description of life of the rich in England a few centuries back.
  2. [final, prelim] James Alan Gardner's "The Ray-Gun: A Love Story" (B); download from publisher's site or alternate link; Asimov's, February 2008: A mysterious gadget of alien origin is bringing a man & woman together, apart from having a purpose of its own.
  3. [prelim] Ted Kosmatka's "The Prophet of Flores" (B); download; Asimov's, September 2007: What if we are lab animals of god?
  4. [prelim] David Moles' "Finisterra" (B); download; F&SF, December 2007; science fiction: Description of a criminal gang on an artificial world.
  5. [final, prelim] Richard Bowes' "If Angels Fight"; download page 01, 02, & 03; F&SF, February 2008: Not read.
  6. [prelim] Michael F Flynn's "Quaestiones Super Caelo et Mundo"; download; Analog, July/August 2007: Not read.
  7. [final, prelim] Lisa Goldstein's "Dark Rooms"; download; Asimov's, October/November 2007: Not read.
  8. [final, prelim] Johanna Sinisalo's "Baby Doll"; read online (no download, will need to scroll down the page to find the story); The SFWA European Hall of Fame, Tor, June 2007 (tr from the Finnish by David Hackston): Not read.
  9. [final, prelim] K D Wentworth's "Kaleidoscope"; download page 01 & 02; F&SF, May 2007: Not read.
  10. [final] Mary Rosenblum's "Night Wind"; Deborah J Ross (Ed)'s Lace and Blade, Norilana Books, February 2008: Not read.
