There have been a lot of similar stories, but it was still charming.

Story summary.

Human colonists arrive on a world inhabited by intelligent hominid natives. Natives living in iron age & willing to submit themselves to newly arrived human masters without protest. Also, astonishingly, natives aware of the worlds in the skies & of traveling between them!

Learning about natives will make the human invaders learn something vital about themselves...
