Jack Williamson's "Hindsight" (short story, space opera, time travel, free)

This widely anthologized story didn't really make much of an impression on me.

This story is from the point of view of a traitor - but one who both remains a traitor & also redeems his loyalty.

Story summary.

Pirates based in asteroid belt control all space lanes & are powerful enough to be overlords of inhabited worlds, including earth. Now that earth is building resistance, one of their space fleets is headed to earth to crush. Only, the pirates' key inventor is earth born. Should he let home world be crushed by his current masters?
