Robert Heinlein's "The Roads Must Roll" (novelette, free)

Terrorist attack on suburban transport system causes much mayhem.

Transport system is based on rolling roads - roads move rather than you. Road comprises of many strips moving at different speeds. Speed of nearby strips differ in small enough amount that you can walk across; strips in the middle of the road move rather fast.
