Hal Clement's Iceworld & Phoenix' discovery of subsurface ice on Mars

SMD's post "Ice on Mars?" yesterday at The World in a Satin Bag links Katharine Sanderson's '"Ice!" screams NASA's Phoenix lander' at Nature.

Opening sentence of Katharine's post: "Whoohoo! Was keeping my eye on some chunks of bright stuff & they disappeared! Sublimated!"

It sounds so much like a scene from Hal Clement's "Iceworld" - though Iceworld scene is set near Mars' polar ice cap rather than involving subsurface ice. And ice evaporation in Iceworld is because of visiting alien's body heat.
