James P Hogan's "The Tree of Dreams" (novelette, free): Colonists meet more than their match in apparently pacific natives

Idea is very similar to at least half a dozen stories of Eric Frank Russell on this subject: militarily powerful colonists land at an apparently defenseless world full of pacific natives - only the world is not so defenseless.

Not a bad read, but very ordinary when compared with Russell's best on the subject. And natives aren't quite pacific here.

Note.

  1. At least one of the may be half dozen Russell stories I've read on the subject is online - "... And Then There Were None" (download). It also happens to be among his better stories, though better is a relative term (he's among the genre's very best).

Fact sheet.
