James P Hogan's "The Tree of Dreams" (novelette, free): Colonists meet more than their match in apparently pacific natives
Idea is very similar to at least half a dozen stories of Eric Frank Russell on this subject: militarily powerful colonists land at an apparently defenseless world full of pacific natives - only the world is not so defenseless.
Not a bad read, but very ordinary when compared with Russell's best on the subject. And natives aren't quite pacific here.
Note.
- At least one of the may be half dozen Russell stories I've read on the subject is online - "... And Then There Were None" (download). It also happens to be among his better stories, though better is a relative term (he's among the genre's very best).
Fact sheet.
