A Bertram Chandler's "The Bird-Brained Navigator" (novelette, problem solving, free)

John Grimes, trapped as hostage on a sea going vessel with hostile aliens & a criminal human for crew on the alien world called Tharn, engineers a biological arrangement that will result in authorities freeing him & catching the criminals.

Note.

I found one scene very cooked up. Criminals' vessel with very inadequate crew leaves port against port police's wishes, & authorities don't even challenges the escapees!
