Different phases of John Varley's career

So far, I've had an extremely good opinion of John Varley's fiction. But this is based only only a few stories I've personally read.

Now a veteran of the genre reading classifies the career of Varley where the mood changes drastically every decade: "We had this Varley, where while bad things happened, individuals could still hope for rewarding lives, the depressed cynical Varley of the 1980s, burned by Hollywood, sort of a return to 1970s form Varley in the 1990s and Angry Old SF Writer Varley from the '00s."
