Robert Moore Williams' "Robot's Return" (short story, archeology, free)
Three robots from a far away world are visiting a dead earth in far future. Their history hints it as the home world - world they originated from. They'll slowly reconstruct the story of their builders.
There is cheating here, particularly the ending where they realize connection with the man. But I mostly liked it.
