It read like just another story till: "to learn what it was that I felt as I stared down at you and your new family: diminished, as though I had become nothing more
than an outmoded contrivance." From then on, it was a different story
for me.
It's an emotional one - lament of a sentient robot, abandoned by its creator during a disaster. Replace robot with an unloved adopted child or a pet, & it might feel a little more familiar.
