A short story, novelette, novella distinction that is not based on word count!

C N Brown at Locus Roundtable:

  1. "short stories generally focus on a single character and event".
  2. "Novelettes generally have two characters".
  3. "novellas show the interactions between four characters (although one of them could be the world or the setting)".
I'd not noticed this distinction, & had a feeling his short story definition really applied to flash fiction. May be I will begin noticing distinctions based on this now...
