Jeff Soesbe's "The Very Difficult Diwali of Sub-Inspector Gurushankar Rajaram" (novelette, humor, free)

Travails of a cop on crowd control duty on a festival day in a future Bangalore. Sometimes funny (after a slow start).

Plot includes little kids driving a herd of genetically modified elephants to a crowded location full of revelers to protest about something, government bent on killing both kids & elephants to avoid stampede when they arrive, unsuccessful efforts of a bunch of smart genetically modified monkeys to halt the herd's progress, good hearted cop's efforts to resolve the situation peaceably for everyone... Eventually, happy ending.

Too much drama, but I generally liked it.

Fact sheet.
