Greg Egan on AI

In an interview with Renai LeMay at Keeping the Door:"When we do finally grope our way towards some tangible results [in creating artificially intelligent consciousness], I hope we proceed slowly and carefully, because this has the potential to lead to a lot of suffering.

The present generation of humans emerged out of hundreds of millions of years of animals tearing each other’s throats out, and tens of thousands of years of people being prey to famine and disease. We might aspire to do much better than that, but creating an entirely new kind of intelligence that’s happy with its own place in the world is an incredibly daunting prospect."

Greg Egan Imposter

Greg Egan, quoted by Dave Langford in Ansible, #265 (August 2009): "photographs of an illustrious professor of electrical engineering from Monash University have been popping up on obscure fannish web sites recently, next to articles about my books... it turns out that as far back as 2006, it had already crossed into a new host and infected the dust jacket of a Spanish translation of Axiomatic."

Reminded me of duplicate Dhurandhar Bhatavrekar in the hilarious movie "Rang Birangi" (1983).

Greg Egan's "Crystal Nights" (novelette, AI, free): A retelling of Theodore Sturgeon's "Microcosmic God"

Undoubtedly one of the better science fiction stories of 2008, but I still prefer Sturgeon's original. Sturgeon uses less jargon & is more consistent.

Story summary.

Daniel Cliff is a rich businessman who's purchased rights to someone's private invention - a tiny optical computer that works better than buildings full of conventional ones.

He's going to run a simulation in it of a microcosmic universe - a world called Sapphire & its moon, local evolution of life, & a handle to our physical universe via a "monolith" placed on their moon (remember Clarke's "2001 A Space Odyssey"?) once they evolve enough to reach their moon. This monolith is actually a control panel for actual equipment in a physics lab in our world.

Idea is to eventually have them outsmart humans because of their much faster evolution - so they can do things for him in our world. Daniel personally has ambitions to be digitized & uploaded into their world!

Only, the simulated beings ("Phites") are now way too smart to do his bidding...

Greg Egan's "Glory" (novelette): Space opera meets cyberpunk

Quote from short story titled Glory by Greg EganFantastic start - initial 10%, if you have the right kind of tastes & some exposure to stories about uploaded consciousness. While there are elements here borrowed from other stories, the whole setup is wholly original. At least I had not read of this kind star-travel before. Far fetched - as is all space opera, but interesting.

Rest of the story is mundane though readable. But the start carried me through rest of the story.

Story summary.

It's set a long time into future. Humans are effectively immortal - thanks to ability to save/read/backup consciousness, can assume almost any animal shape by manufacturing the body from locally available materials & downloading a stored consciousness into it, nano-factories are common, & humans are part of a galaxy spanning civilization that presumably includes many alien species. This civilization is called Amalgam.

A pair of humans have traveled far - to an unnamed world, to make first contact with local aliens known as Noudah. Most interesting part of the story is this travel. A few molecules delivered to a world called Baneth in the alien target world's system via a fancy (& generally incomprehensible) mechanism where they transform into nano-factories that manufacture a communications receiver. And listen just in time to a carefully timed manufacturing program arriving there from another star system.

They will use this program to build two beings that look like natives of target world, & upload the consciousness of two human beings into them (with multiple backups still kept elsewhere). These beings, Anne & Joan, will make contact with the locals.

These factories will also manufacture two small spaceships using local materials - one for each of the two humans. Then the factories will self-destruct, after removing all traces of their presence.

Why two individuals in two ships? Well - the target world has two superpowers (Tira & Ghahar), & they are the only ones considered worthy of contact. Anne will make contact with Tirans; Joan with Ghahari.

Ostensible reason for contact is to read archives of Niah - a lost & very advanced civilization on this alien planet. Due to local apathy, these archives are likely to be soon lost. Humans preumably think highly of the mathematics of this long lost race, & are keen to learn all they can.

There will be much drama - after all, these aliens represent current human polarizations. Eventually, both visitors will die there - Anne killed by military of Tira, Joan doing self destruction. Oh - they aren't really dead. Only local bodies are gone - they are going to be revived from backups elsewhere in galaxy. It's apparently cheaper & more plausible than return trip.

Greg Egan's "Dark Integers" (novelette, science fiction): Communicating with & fighting aliens from a parallel universe!

Quote from short story titled Dark Integers by Greg Egan. An example of the kind of sentences the story is littered with.Tolerable second half; utterly boring first half.

Concept is similar to Asimov's "The Gods Themselves". In this story, there is a way to pass messages across the universes, & to effect changes to destabilize material across them - sort of hurling bombs at the other side! There is also the concept of a vast & concrete border between the universes - porous through the story, tightened near end!

Bane of the story is author's attempts to explain this essentially magical technology. And not once, but repeatedly in first half, less often in second half - just too many complicated sentences that don't mean anything at all. Quote in the box at the top right of this page is among the clearest of a lot of such sentences.

In author's explanations of underlying technology, you find strong echoes of Arthur Clarke's "Nine Billion Names of God". A computation in an ordinary laptop makes changes to either the border between the universes or causes major instability at the other end! Controlled & small changes to border are used to set up communications channels across universes (& also among the human protagonists).

To understand the title of the story, you need to be a computer programmer familiar with C++. One of the protagonists has code that includes a class named "dark" - short for "dark int", the way "long" is a shorthand for "long int". It models a 4096-bit unsigned integer. Why call it dark? "Dark matter, dark energy ... dark integers. They're all around us, but we don't usually see them, because they don't quite play by the rules." Whenever a variable of type dark gets certain values assigned, some sort of instability happens in the parallel world! Irrespective of the machine the program is run on, or underlying CPU architecture! So long as programmer's intention is that it holds a certain integer value!!!

Story summary.

There is a cabal of 4 superheroes (well, one heroine among them): Bruno Costanzo from Sydney (the narrator); Alison from Zurich; 80 year old Yuen from Shanghai; & Dr Tim Campbell from Wellington, New Zealand. Campbell joins the cabal midway through the story.

Bruno & Alison were once students of Yuen at a university in Shanghai. There, they had some idea about these parallel universes & did something. Result was inadvertent major damage on the other side. An alien called Sam contacted them, told them of the result, & recruited their support to ensure such breach never takes place again. Oh - and aliens have known about our existence for long, & have been monitoring us.

Cabal is born comprising Bruno, Alice, & Yuen. They decide to keep this information to themselves, & not inform any government - because governments will likely turn it into dangerous weapons.

10 years have passed. Another incident is reported by Sam. Looks like someone else somewhere on earth has again done the computation on his computer that kind of hurled a bomb at the other side. And this appears to be a rather powerful bomb - hitting deep inside their universe; cabal's original just touched the border.

Narrator turns detective. Locates Campbell as culprit. After some drama, Campbell will get recruited as a super theorist into the cabal.

Aliens want to know how Campbell mounted attack. Our friends refuse to divulge, because aliens have been holding back information too.

A sort of uneasy truce ensues for a while. Our friends spend this time actually mapping the near Sol planets of the parallel universe! Looks like Sam is actually aboard a spacecraft that has been chasing earth's trajectory! They also perfect (computational) weapons to attack in case aliens attack.

Of course, alien attack comes suddenly. Initially, they mess with world's banking system. Soon, all kinds of communications systems are under attack. They are also making planes crash, factories bursting, ...

Cabal convenes. Remember, they have secret communications channel using the cross-universe border; so shut down of normal communications networks don't affect them. They mount counter attack. Eventually a truce is agreed. Borders are sealed - except for a small breach. Well - this breach can be used both for communications, & in future attacks from either side... But all is well for now.

Notes.

In some of the reviews of this story on the web, the author is congratulated in questing the premises of arithmetic: why must 2+2=4?

I was taught that maths is just a collection of assumed axioms, & things rigorously derived from them. I'm unable to comprehend the idea that axioms or statements I made have changed by themselves! Even if I forget that my artificial system of deduction that is maths actually affects the physical world - in my universe, or in someone else's.

This would have been a much better story had the author kept the mechanics unspelled- the way Asimov did in "The Gods Themselves".

Greg Egan's "Steve Fever": "Benign" autonomous robot swarm has a mission of its own!

Interesting robot story, & among the most readable cyberpunk stories I have yet seen. Unlike most cyberpunk, you don't have the text littered with technobabble; focus is generally on telling the story rather than impressing you with number of tech-sounding words author can spell.

Story summary.

Steve Hasluck is the man who created nanobots - very tiny robots - for medical purposes. They are kind of "tiny surgical instruments" that can "make decisions of their own, on the spot".They can be injected into your body; they will make local diagnosis & take local actions in affected part of body to heal you.

One find day, Steve is diagnosed with a kind of cancer for which there is no cure. He lets his robot army lose on finding a cure - injecting some cancerous tissue in rats & helping robots do the discovery. Because of lack of progress, his eventually provides his robot army with senses to let them explore the web & other human sources of information, & with "two clear goals. The first was to do no harm to their hosts. The second was to find a way to save his life or, failing that, to bring him back from the dead." To aid this, Steve "had arranged to have his body preserved in liquid nitrogen."

But Steve ends up dying in a road accident, with a burned out brain! His bot-army, eventually known as Steveware (individual bots are Stevelets), is intent on carrying out their assigned task - of bringing him back from the dead!

They learn to replicate themselves, to build "polymer radio antennas" beneath the skin of animals they infect so they can have a kind of grid communications network, & begin infecting humans to learn about the human consciousness. Based on known information about Steve, & the experience they gain by testing on humans, they hope to resurrect their creator!

When they infect a human, they can make him forced to think their thoughts, & carry out their agenda. They have survived all attempts of humans to wipe them out or game them into believing their mission has been accomplished. Humans can still keep trying with "counterware", & there are "Stevologists" - people studying Steveware behavior.

Over the years, they have built a lot of property in human world by trading their products - "everything from high-grade pharmaceuticals to immaculately faked designer shoes".

Main story is about infection of a 14 year old boy, Lincoln, by Steveware - about 30 years after the death of Steve - for carrying out a human consciousness experiment, & eventually his safe release when the experiment is over. We are told rest of the story as background information spread through the main story.
