"after a long battle with" "advanced prostate cancer" at age 78 (1930-2009).
His only story I've read - "Billennium" - didn't work for me. But he seems to be a well regarded one. I've an impression his best known stories are depressing.

Very depressing story about living space crunch on an over-populous earth. And only descriptions are offered - of ever reducing square feet available per person; no solution is offered.
